As heavy rains persisted in southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, they triggered massive floods, severely impacting schools and the social projects led by the Marist Brothers of Brazil.

The situation continues to deteriorate with each passing day. The death toll has risen to at least 143, while almost 619.484 have been displaced from their homes. Over 130 individuals remain unaccounted for, leaving their families increasingly concerned. The floodwaters submerged entire communities, overwhelming rescue efforts and forcing many to evacuate with only the clothes on their backs. As the floodwaters recede, the full extent of the devastation becomes evident. The task of rebuilding appears daunting, with some towns completely isolated and critical infrastructure damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, the looming threat of additional rainfall exacerbates the already dire circumstances.

Nevertheless, amidst the adversity, a spirit of solidarity emerges. Healthcare professionals are tirelessly providing aid to the injured despite facing significant challenges. Continued support is crucial as many families await news of their missing loved ones.

While the road to recovery will be long and arduous, there is solace in the collective strength of the community. Together, through perseverance and unity, there is hope for a brighter future ahead.
