As heavy rains have persisted in southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, they have triggered massive floods, severely impacting schools and the social projects led by the Marist Brothers of Brazil.

The situation has continued to deteriorate with each passing day. The death toll has risen to at least 157, while almost 619,484 people have been displaced from their homes. Over 130 individuals have remained unaccounted for, leaving their families increasingly concerned. The floodwaters have submerged entire communities, overwhelming rescue efforts and forcing many to evacuate with only the clothes on their backs. As the floodwaters have receded, the full extent of the devastation has become evident. The task of rebuilding has appeared daunting, with some towns completely isolated and critical infrastructure severely damaged. Furthermore, the looming threat of additional rainfall has exacerbated the already dire circumstances.

Nevertheless, amidst the adversity, a spirit of solidarity has emerged. Healthcare professionals have tirelessly provided aid to the injured despite facing significant challenges. Continued support has been crucial as many families have awaited news of their missing loved ones.

While the path to recovery has been long and arduous, there has been solace in the collective strength of the community. Together, through perseverance and unity, we have held out hope for a brighter future.
